Overlooking the Loire River, the Palais Briau, also known as Château de la Madeleine, reflects the strong personality of its owner: François Briau (1812-1890). Railroad builder and mayor of Varades, he brought explosive modernity to his estate built in the style of Italian palazzi. A pioneer of the railway industry in France, he was called upon to build the Ancona-Bologna line for the Roman railways in 1857. It was on this occasion that he discovered a large number of Roman objects, including the collection of engraved plates and sculptures presented in our sale. As a social entrepreneur, he contributed to the well-being of his employees and to the construction of model farms, which can still be seen around the Madeleine.
