French School, circa 1760 Portrait of a doctor with a book (Hippocrates, T. II) Canvas. Dated above the letter 10 of Sept [amber]/ 1755. Restorations. 92 x 74 cm On the back, a label: From 8 June 1858/Inventory after the death of the late Mrs Marie-Hélène Buriez/ widow of Mr Nicolas Joseph/ Saladin/ while he was alive owner and/or mathematics teacher/ in Strasbourg Strasbourg/ Study of Mr Hte Momy, notary in Strasbourg. It is most likely Charles-Nicolas Saladin. Born in 1773 in La Bassée, this doctor from Lille was appointed professor of mathematics at the Lille Academy of Arts in 1762 and librarian of this city on 24 brumaire year IX. He also worked as a professor of mathematics in Strasbourg where he died in 1829.
