François BOUCHER (Paris 1703-1770) Le Dîner Sanguine. Slightly... - Lot 11 - Daguerre
François BOUCHER (Paris 1703-1770) Le Dîner Sanguine. Slightly insolated (a yellowed strip along the upper edge under the mounting), glued right on an old lining, some stitches on the armchair back on the left and a small tear (0.5 cm) in the center above the figure's head on the left. The pale line of blood underneath must correspond to a counter-test, a process used by other French artists in the 18th century such as Fragonard and Robert. The first, more sketchy line is currently lost. 22 x 24 cm Provenance: Former collection of Count Anne-Henri de Biéville-Noyant, her stamp at bottom right (L. 3381). Former collection of Chennevières, her stamp at the bottom left (L.2072). Sale Chennevières, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, May 5-6, 1898, n°22, sold 1250 francs to Gauchez. Anonymous sale, Paris, Charpentier gallery, March 21, 1958, n°144. Bibliography : Alexandre Ananoff, L'oeuvre dessiné de François Boucher, catalogue raisonné, tome I, Paris 1966, n°104. Louis-Antoine Prat, and Laurence Lhinares, La collection Chennevières : Quatre siècles de dessins français, Musée du Louvre, Paris, 2007, and ENSBA, fig. 1016, p. 479, repr.). Related work: A counter-proof of this drawing belonged to the Fould-Springer collection (Christie's sale, Royaumont, 19-21 September 2011, no. 79). We would like to thank Mr. Alastair Laing for having authenticated this drawing from a photograph, as well as Mrs. Françoise Joulie, who was able to examine it in person. The drawing will be included in their future catalogues raisonnés. Dated from the first part of his career, this drawing is reminiscent in its ardour of the illustrations for Molière. The daily scene of the meal is transcribed with astonishing liveliness. An underlying trace of a lighter sanguine is noticeable in the figure of the mother carrying her child.
