Giovanni Antonio BURRINI (Bologna 1656-1727)... - Lot 25 - Daguerre
Giovanni Antonio BURRINI (Bologna 1656-1727) Maiden head Poplar panel. Ancient restorations. 45 x 38 cm This painting is the counterpart of the Boy's Head sold in our study on 19 March 2019, lot n° 46, octagonal and of the same size (fig. 1). Comparison of the verso shows that the poplar panel was cut in the same way . These two paintings can be related to the study of two heads (Modena, Civic Museum of Art, Galleria Campori) or to the Self-Portrait of the Artist (Florence, Uffizi Gallery). At the turn of the 18th century, Burrini revitalized Bolognese painting , breaking with the academic and repetitive formulas of Guido Reni's followers. With his friends Pasinelli and Canuti, he was inspired by the vivid tones of the Venetian school, Veronese and Tintoretto, while keeping the memory of the character heads of the Carracci or Guerchin (the features and profile of our young girl recall some saints or Madonnas of the first part of the Guerchin's career). As early as 1739, Abbot Giampietro Zanotti, historiographer of the Clementine Academy of Bologna, described Burrini's style as "warm and frank", executed with free impasto and nervous brushstrokes, apparent and removed.
