Karl Eduardovich GEFTLER (1853-1918) View of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg from Neva, 1892 Watercolour on paper. Signed lower right in Cyrillic K. Geftler, dated (18)92 and dedicated to dear friend A. Chimkevitch. Framed, stains and insolation. 27 x 47 cm (on view) Related work: a watercolour depicting the Quai aux Sphinx in front of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, entitled The Sphinxes on the Neva Embankment (1894), 21.5 x 31 cm, at Hermitage Fine Art, lot 490, April 26, 2019, was sold for €19,050. This watercolour was part of the personal collection of Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918). Background: After training at the Institute of Civil Engineering, Karl Geftler graduated from the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts as a landscape painter. With this dual training, he excelled in architectural landscape painting, which played a central role in his work. He became an active member of the Society of Russian Watercolorists within the St. Petersburg Society of Artists. From then on, he enjoyed great success at his first exhibitions in 1888 where his watercolours were highly appreciated by collectors and art lovers. Today, it is possible to admire his works in many museums in Russia, in particular in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and the Museum of Fine Arts in Omsk.
