Pierre-Charles LE MONNIER (1715-1799) astronomer.... - Lot 1 - Daguerre
Pierre-Charles LE MONNIER (1715-1799) astronomer. L.A.S., Paris 14 November 1780, to Monseigneur; 1 page in-4. He read yesterday at the public assembly of the Royal College "the work done on the slope of the rivers and particularly on the slope of the Seine from Paris to Rouen. [] The work was an abridged history of the discoveries made on the gravity of the air from Galileo to this day. I intend, Monseigneur, to insert this speech at the head of the work which I have printed in the Louvre and which for this reason has been and which, for this reason, has been delayed. We did not know how high we were, either in Paris or at the Observatory, above of the sea, and this is what our new experiments have decided upon, from 20 to 25 toises, instead of 5 toises for the slope of the Seine, up to its mouth" Ex 179
