Jean-Baptiste SANTERRE (1651-1717) The cabbage cutter Canvas. Old restorations. 86 x 70 cm There are several autographed versions of this composition, the first of which was exhibited at the 1704 Salon. (Booklet p. 41, note 2, addition of the 3rd edition, Paris, ed. Liepmannssohn et Dufour, 1869). There is an anonymous and undated engraving of the time, published in Paris by Diacre, accompanied by a tasty quatrain Isabeau who is not fond of food, Makes her feast with cabbage, And saves her fat and meat, For when she has a husband There is also another engraving of the painting, published when one of the versions was part of the cabinet of Monsieur Poulain.
