This painting has a certificate from the Art Loss Register of June 2016. After studying architectural drawing at the Antwerp academy, Van Dael left his native city in 1786 and settled in Paris. Under the influence of Gerard van Spaendonck, he specialized in flower painting. He obtained a rapid success and commissions to decorate the castles of Saint-Cloud, Bellevue and Chantilly. He attracted a clientele of collectors and important patrons; the empress Josephine, a flower lover, acquired at least two of his works for her at least two of his works for her cabinet at the Château de Malmaison. In addition to large bouquets composed in the northern tradition of Van Huysum, Van Dael painted several still lifes centred on a single small vase of a few flowers, here a blooming Pierre de Ronsard rose and others still in bud. The transparency of the glass, the drops of water on the foliage reinforce the realism and the virtuoso limpidity of this painting.
