A Directoire period mahogany and mahogany veneer chair attributed to Jacob frères The overturned openwork back decorated with an Athenian woman. It stands on sabre feet. Inscription on the crossbar: Berryer. H. 86 W. 46 D. 40 cm Provenance: Pierre-Nicolas Berryer (1757-1841) French lawyer and jurisconsult. Lawyer at the Parliament in 1780, he was in charge of the defence of Marshal Ney before the Chamber of Peers in 1815. Father of the royalist lawyer Pierre-Antoine Berryer (1790- 1868), defender of the elder branch of the Bourbons, and of General Hippolyte-Nicolas Berryer (1795-1857).
