FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1700 Portrait of Maximilien... - Lot 27 - Daguerre
FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1700 Portrait of Maximilien Pierre François de Béthune, third Duke of Sully (1664-1712) Canvas enlarged on three sides. Old restorations, small missing parts. 66 x 54,5 cm Our painting is a bust of the equestrian portrait of the Duke of Sully kept in the castle of Sully sur Loire (canvas 91 x 79 cm). The model, also known as Maximilien V, Prince of Henrichemont and Boisbelle, then Duke of Sully in 1694 and peer of France. His brother, Maximilien-Henri de Béthune (1669-1729), Marquis de Conty, Duke of Béthune, commissioned his portrait from his portrait to Hyacinthe Rigaud in 1713, probably to commemorate his recent title of 5th Duke of Sully acquired (cf Ariane James Sarrazin, complete catalogue of Rigaud's work, online: http://www.hyacinthe-rigaud.com/catalogueraisonne-hyacinthe-rigaud/portraits/1031-bethune-desullymaximilien-henri-de).
