Upper Rhine, ca. 1500 Angel musician Round-body... - Lot 152 - Daguerre
Upper Rhine, ca. 1500 Angel musician Round-body in wood. Small accidents, missing wings, restorations. It rests on a hexagonal wooden base wood base decorated with arcatures H. 67 cm Base H. 20 cm This angel playing the shawm probably belonged to a group of sculpted musician angels accompanying a scene from the Nativity of Christ. The artist took care to give it the swollen cheek shape that evokes the moment when the musician is about to blow, as can be seen in the player of this double-reed instrument in the famous group carved by the workshop of Tilman Riemenschneider (ca. 1505, basswood, 49 x 83.5 x 12.3 cm, Berlin, Bode Museum inv. Nr.1559). The style of the superior painter and engraver Martin Schongauer seems to be the main source of inspiration for our roundel: the great animation of the angel is the result of of the beautiful complexity of his drapery, skilfully animated by deep and angular hollows
