[16th century book]. [Bible. French. 1567]. THE BIBLE, which is the whole holy scripture: containing the Old & New Testaments. Otherwise, the Old & New Covenant. With arguments on each book, figures, maps both chorographic and other. [From the printing house of François Estienne, 1567. Four parts in a large volume in-8, contemporary ivory vellum, double and mute spine with 4 nerves, cold fleurons, boards decorated with a double framing of fillets with angular fleurons and central medallion, all in cold, brass clasps finished with a finger motif, red edges (qq. stains on the spine; plates repaired and some faded; mq. touching qq. words on the last f. of the Confession; title of the Calendar dirtied with tears in the margins.) A fine copy of this Bible in French, in a neat contemporary binding. This is the Geneva version, preceded by the preface of John Calvin which opens with: "If I wanted to use here a long preface, I would have three points to deduce. The first would be to show what a treasure it is of the Holy Scripture. The New Testament, which forms the second part, has a special title page; it is preceded by the "Estat des Juifs sous la monarchie des Romains" (State of the Jews under the monarchy of the Romans), and followed by the Psalms in the version of Clément Marot and Théodore de Bèze, with notated music, traditionally accompanied by "La Forme des prieres ecclesiastiques", "Catechisme" and "Confession de foy". The illustration, entirely woodcut, consists of 6 plates, one of which is double and 4 folding, offering a tree of consanguinity and 5 maps, as well as some figures in the text. The last part contains a historical calendar printed in red and black, preceded by a special title and illustrated with 24 woodcut figures (12 vignettes of the works of the months and 12 signs of the zodiac). Collation: [4]-370-90-122-[12]; [82] folio; sign. : *4 a-z8 A-Y8 Z10 aa-ll8 mm2 AA-QQ8 RR6 (the last blank); Aa-Ii8 Kk10; *8. (USTC 1473; Paris Bibles, 412; Darlow & Moule 3730).
