CORNEILLE (Pierre). Théâtre de Pierre Corneille, avec des commentaires S.l., s.n., 1764. 12 vol. in-8, glazed blond calf, smooth spine decorated with Greek roulettes, and special fleurons, one of which evoking the dramatic art, all gilt, black title-piece, garnet mosaic tomaison, double gilt roulette bordering the boards, one of which floral, gilt roulette at the necks and chasses, gilt edges [Bozérian] (small worm tracts on 4 spines, without gravity - t.1, 2 and 5 - , 2 corners dulled on t.9, qq. light rubbing and superf. scratches; ordinary edition's russeting and browning; detailed collation on request). A fine copy, finely established by Bozérian, of this edition that Voltaire had printed by the Cramer brothers in Geneva, accompanying it with his comments, in order to endow a descendant of the Great Cornelius, whom he had taken in. According to Cohen, "all Europe took part in it". The work is illustrated with a frontispiece representing the Genius crowning the bust of Corneille, engraved by Watelet after Pierre, and 34 plates after Gravelot's compositions, engraved by Baquoy, Flipart, Lemire, de Longueil and others. Provenance: Philippe-Louis de Bordes de Fortage, Bordelais, died 1924 (engraved armorial bookplate); another monogrammed gilt bookplate. (Cohen 255).
