(errata), 17th century glazed havana calf, 5-ribbed spine, garnet morocco title-piece, ornamented caissons, gilt roulette at the edges, speckled edges (spine worn with gaps in the cover, missing headpieces, dull corners; very light angular wetness at the beginning of the volume, then marginal and sporadic; notebook Y bound in disorder). First edition, second printing of this treatise by the Milanese painter Paolo Lomazzo (1538-1600), which occupies a special place in the artistic literature of his time, to the point of being considered the "Bible of Mannerism. In addition to his analysis and precepts concerning the conception and realization of the painted work, the artist delivers here a history of his art and provides valuable information on the artists of his time, some of which had not been formulated by Vasari. A table of the artists mentioned appears at the end of the book. Provenance: Edmund Burke (1729-1797), Irish philosopher and politician; a liberal thinker, opposed to the French Revolution, he was also the author of works of aesthetic philosophy (bookplate stencilled "Edmund Burke / Beaconsfield" at foot of title).
