LUCAIN. Pharsalia, sive Bellis civilis libri decem. Lugduni Batavorum, apud S. Luchtmans, 1728. Fort in-4, [1] f. (engraved title), [37] f., 966 p., [96] f., pl., contemporary ivory vellum, smooth spine, handwritten title, traces of laces, gilt arms on boards (snags on lower board and at foot of 2 spines; light angular wetness at beginning of vol. then fading). An esteemed critical edition of La Pharsale, edited by Frans van Oudendorp (1696-1761), professor at the University of Leiden, and including notes and comments by several scholars, including Glaeanus and Hugo Grotius. It is illustrated with a beautiful copper-engraved title-frontispice by F. van Bleyswyc after H. van der My, and a folding map also engraved on copper. Provenance: with the arms of the city of Arnhem: prize book with handwritten mention dated 1754, for Jacob Copes van Hasselt (1740-1802), who later became an eminent jurist and published a thesis in Arnhem in 1763, entitled: "De usu atque auctoritate juris civilis Romanorum in Gelria dissertatio".
