[Binding with the arms]. Two parts in one folio volume, [4] f., 535 p. ; [4] f. 459 p., contemporary glazed fawn calf, 6-ribbed spine, gilt title and fleurons, caissons and boards bordered by a double gilt fillet, large gilt arms in the center of the boards (snags to the headpieces formerly restored, upper bit partly split with small cover damage to the edges of the nerves, sporadic moderate browning). Famous edition of the Memoirs of the Minister of Henry IV, whose success gave rise at the time to (at least) two forgeries, one published in Rouen in 1649, the other in Paris in 1665. The original edition had been printed in the castle of Sully by a printer of Anger, in 1638. One distinguishes it, according to Brunet, by the use of Roman characters, and not italics, for the parallel of César with Henri the Great appearing on pages 469 to 476 of t.1; here, the characters are indeed Roman, but the pages concerned are from 470 to 479. As always the two title pages are decorated with a large engraved vignette, painted in red and green, with a foliage motif and the letter "V" repeated three times. Provenance : Georges Joly de Blaisy (1610-1679), President of the Parliament of Burgundy (arms on the boards). (Brunet, V, 589-590).
