In-4, navy blue half-maroquin with corners, spine with 3 raised bands decorated with gilt stippling, author, title and date gilt, mosaic decoration covering a large central box, gilt head, cover and spine preserved (one corner dulled; brown spots). Deluxe edition, decorated with a portrait and 176 woodcuts, some of them out of the text in 2 tones, after Auguste Leroux, engraved by Duplessis, Ernest Florian, Froment, Gusman and Perrichon. Text nicely printed by the Imprimerie Nationale in italic Garamond. Limited edition of 410 copies: one of 333 on vellum (n°318). Illustrated prospectus (4 pages) bound at the end. Enriched with an autograph letter signed by Anatole France, to a "Dear Friend", dated "Tuesday", ½ p. in-12, headed to the Hotel Restaurant du Chapon fin in Bordeaux. "I had to hasten my departure. I arrive in Bordeaux at 6 a.m. [] I mail myself for you to the library the three volumes that you have so kindly communicated to me." Provenance : Gaston Maury (2 woodcut bookplates).
