The natural arch, from which the Arveyron, the outlet of the Mer de Glace, came out, was a natural curiosity frequented by tourists since the 18th century and has been represented by many artists. Coming from a line of landscape painters (notably his father Anne-Pierre Leprince and his brother Xavier Leprince), Robert Léopold Leprince exhibited at the Parisian Salons from 1822 to 1844 and won a medal in 1824. He travelled throughout France and painted views of Lake Annecy and the Alps. It was probably at the same time that he painted this View of the Grande Chartreuse in Grenoble. After having lived in Chartres, he painted on the motif in the forest of Fontainebleau, ten years before the generation of the Barbizon school. C13.
