Jean Baptiste VINCHON (Paris, 1787 - Ems, Allemagne 1855)
Jean Baptiste VINCHON (Paris, 1787 - Ems, Germany 1855) D1. French painter circa 1840, Two painters in the forest (Fontainebleau ?), paper marouflé on canvas, 31,5x26 cm. D2. François-Edme Ricois (Courtalain, 1795 - Mareil-Marly, 1881), View of a castle, canvas signed lower right, 31,5x44 cm. A student of Bertin and Girodet, François-Edme Ricois exhibited regularly at the Parisian salons from 1819. He made many trips to France, Germany and Switzerland, during which he often painted castles (Chambord, Chenonceaux, Courtanvaux, ). His views of buildings that have disappeared, such as the castles of Montalet and La Mailleraye, are precious to us. He died after having participated in twenty-seven Parisian salons and his works are preserved in the greatest French museums (Louvre Museum, Carnavalet Museum, Lille Museum of Fine Arts, Versailles Castle Museum, ). The temple of Vesta in Tivoli, paper mounted on canvas, 44x34 cm, on the back stamp of the house HOUARD. By confusion with the neighboring temple, the temple of Vesta was for a long time named "temple of the Sibyl" by painters (Natoire, Vernet, Dietrich, Piranesi, Fragonard, Robert, Berthélémy, Vincent, ). Throughout the 18th century, one could see a tree in the center of the temple of Vesta. Joseph Vernet represents it from 1730-40, still young. We find it more developed in Vincent, Reclam and Fragonard (around 1760) who probably exaggerates its size for compositional reasons. Still present in a view of Louis-Pierre Baltard around 1799, it disappeared in 1804, when Granet executed one of his first views of the site. D7.
