Rare unpublished portrait of the great Italian scholar and art lover. Cassiano del Pozzo studied at the University of Pisa, moved to Rome in 1612 where he frequented the entourage of Cardinal del Monte, then became secretary to Cardinal Barberini in 1623. With a scientific background, he was a member of the Academy of the Lynceans and frequented Galileo. He accompanied Cardinal Barberini on his embassies to France and Spain and had all the exotic animals he discovered drawn. exotic animals that he discovers there. Around 1615 he began his Museo Cartaceo, in which all the great artists participated. He will gather thousands of drawings and engravings, mainly around the antique subjects, the statements of antique sculptures and the scientific subjects that he liked. A first-rate collector, he owned works by all the great artists: Caravaggio, Vouet, Artemisia Gentileschi, Bernini, Dominichino, Guido Reni, Pietro Testa, Algardi, Mellan, etc. He is known to have been the first great patron of Poussin who drew for him subjects and and antique surveys. He commissioned many paintings from him, including the famous series of the Seven Sacraments. We know a portrait of him by Jan Van de Hoeck, and his bust by Giuliano Finelli. Our drawing represents him probably around 1630. The technique seems to be closer to the French artists, between Vouet and Mellan. The inscription on the reverse of the lining panel refers to Ignazio Hugford (Pisa 1703 - Florence 1778), son of an English clockmaker and a pupil of Gabbiani. At his home, Reynolds, Chambers and Adam were among his pupils. He was an important collector of drawings, of which several thousand have been entered into the Uffizi.
