18th century AUSTRIAN school, entourage of Martin MEYTENS II Portrait of Charles Theodore of Bavaria, Prince of Palatinate-Sulzbach (1724-1799) Original canvas. Inscription on the back: the Serene Prince Charles Theodore of Subrach. Count/Palatine of Rhyn & aged six and a half years. 170 x 113,5 cm Charles Theodore of Bavaria was elector of Bavaria from 1777 to 1799. Protector of the arts, he founded in 1757, in an academy of drawing and sculpture in Mannheim in 1757, as well as an academy of sciences with a cabinet of curiosities in 1763. For the pose of the figure and the architectural background, the artist was inspired by two engravings by I. Smith after portraits by Peter Lely.
