Hubert ROBERT (Paris, 1733-1808) Apple picking Canvas... - Lot 35 - Daguerre
Hubert ROBERT (Paris, 1733-1808) Apple picking Canvas curved in the upper part. Enlarged at the top, at the bottom, and on the right. Old restorations, small tear at the top on the right. 238 x 115,5 cm Without frame. Provenance : castle of Labegorce-Zédé (Gironde) ; sale at Drouot, June 16, 1980, n°39 (with mention of a signature in the lower right corner). The representation of nature plays a major role in Hubert Robert's work. His landscapes, painted in a light and fluid manner, render the limpidity of the sky, to the point of transparency. Their clear and soft light was sought after to illuminate the Parisian apartments, when they were included in the woodwork. Here, a large solitary tree stands out on the banks of a river. A peasant tries to reach the branches with a ladder to pick the fruit. Behind it, washerwomen are cleaning clothes near the water, then a valley opens up that leads the eye into the distance. the eye into a distance where the hills fade away.
