Antoine CAILLAT (born in 1765 in Lyon) Portrait... - Lot 21 - Daguerre
Antoine CAILLAT (born in 1765 in Lyon) Portrait of the Grangier family Canvas Old restorations 128 x 145 cm Provenance : By descent from Etienne Grangier. The artist studied at the School of the Royal Academy in 1787. Let us quote from him, the Portrait of a lady drawing, signed and dated 1786, sold in Vienna (Dorotheum in 1999 and Kinsky in 2016), and the Portraits of Claude Aimé Vincent de Margolas and his son (sale in Paris, Gros et Deletrez in 1997). close to Antoine Vestier, or Pierre Cogell, also active in Lyon. On the left of the composition, we can recognize Floris Grangier (1747-1812), nephew of Etienne Grangier (1719-1797), in the center his wife, Elisabeth (1764-1841), née Regnault, holding on her lap their son, Catherin (1784-1862), godson of Etienne who has no children. The latter is represented on the right of our composition. Etienne Grangier was a deputy of the Community of silk manufacturers. In 1775, he was appointed secretary to the King, keeper of the seals of the Chancellery of the Lyon mint. He lives in Lyon, but owns a part of the Saint-Chamonaise suburb and a whole district of the city. Floris joined his uncle Etienne in the manufacture of fabrics. The company was liquidated in 1790 and Floris returned to Saint-Chamond, to his house at 3 Grand-Rue, where his uncle Etienne also returned and died. Floris was named "President of the Cantonal Assembly" by a document signed by Bonaparte himself. He was invited to the coronation of the Emperor in 1804. Floris Grangier was mayor of Saint-Chamond in 1802 and held this office until his death in 1812. Catherin Grangier was an architect in Saint-Chamond and left works there and is buried in the cemetery in 1862.
