After Yves-Marie le GOUAZ, XVIIIth century Fight of the Avenger Colored engraving, drawn by Nicolas-Marie Ozanne (Ozanne le Jeune) (1728-1811) engraved by Le Gouaz, Yves-Marie (1742-1816) 32 x 43 cm A copy of this engraving is kept in the collections of the Carnavalet Museum, History of Paris and BNF. The Vengeur-du-Peuple or Marseillois was a French warship in service from 1766 to 1794. It was a third rank ship of the line carrying 74 guns on two decks and was launched during the period of patriotic revival that followed the defeats of the Seven Years War. She participated in the American War of Independence, but is best known for her loss in the battle of Prairial in 1794, in circumstances that were glorified by revolutionary propaganda.
