MC3247 This is a reduction of the famous equestrian statue in the Capitoline square in Rome. The work has been known and documented since the tenth century and is one of the most important statues of antiquity to have survived unburied. The monument has been widely copied and studied since the fifteenth century and especially in the late eighteenth century. Thus, artists, amateurs and collectors making the Grand Tour sought reproductions of Marcus Aurelius in bronze, plaster, cameos or intaglios.
