[Sixteenth century book]. AUSONE. Ausonii omnia, quae adhuc in veteribus bibliothecis inveniri potuerunt, Opera. Ad haec, Symmachi et Pontii Paulini litterae ad Ausonium scriptae, tum Ciceronis, Sulpiciae, aliorumque quorundam veterum carmina nonnulla. Cuncta ad varia vetera novaque exemplaria emendata, commentariisque illustrata per Eliam Vinetum. Burdigalae, apud S. Millangium, 1580. in-4, [394] f., [2] f. of plates, figs, 17th century glazed havana calf, spine replaced in pastiche basane, with 5 nerves, brown morocco title-piece, caissons bordered with a double gilt fillet and fleurons, triple gilt fillet bordering the boards, corners restored, red edges (upper bit split at the head along 2 caissons, one corner rubbed, browning). Appreciated edition of the works of the Latin poet from Bordeaux Ausone, which is distinguished by the important commentary of the humanist Elie Vinet (1509-1587), constituting two thirds of the volume. The text was printed in 1575 (date on the title v°), and the commentaries in 1580 (date on the colophon). Title in red and black with vignette with the arms of Bordeaux. Illustrated with 13 figures in the text of the commentaries, including 2 full-page, one offering a view of the city of Bordeaux, and 2 folding plates showing the amphitheater and the Palais Tutele, all woodcut. Provenance: Jean Lolier de Chateaurouge, honorary adviser to the king at the court of aids of Clermont in 1692 (manuscript bookplate); Meaudre de Lapouyade (sale in Bordeaux, no. 282, supposedly, according to an attached note); 2 other old ms. bookplates on the title, as well as the motto "Mort a un ris".
