[VIRGILE]. BARTOLI (Pietro Santi), CAPPELANI (Antonio). Picturae antiquissimi Virgiliani [...]. Romae, apud V. Monaldini, 1782.
[VIRGIL]. BARTOLI (Pietro Santi), CAPPELANI (Antonio). Picturae antiquissimi Virgiliani codicis Bibliothecae Vaticanae a Petro Sancte Bartoli aere incisae; accedunt ex insignioribus pinacothecis picturae aliae veteres, gemmae et anaglypha quibus celebriora Virgilii loca illustrantur, compendiaria explanatione apposita ad singulas tabulas. Romae, apud V. Monaldini, 1782. In-4, [4] f. (1 blank, portr., gr. title, gr. dedication), 31 p., 124 pl., contemporary roasted tan basane, 5-ribbed spine, garnet morocco title-piece, ornamented caissons, spotted edges (spine rubbed, scratches to boards, two corners and tail of spine worn, foxing limited to the text, last 2 pl. a little soiled). Important collection of illustrations of Virgil's works, taken from two manuscripts kept in the Vatican Library, the Vergilius Vaticanus (Vat. Lat. 3225), and the Codex Romanus (Vat. Lat. 3867). These compositions had been the subject of a first publication in 1741; here, the editor has added a large number of figures and scenes taken from engraved stones, and thus the iconographic corpus proposed, composed of 124 copperplate engravings, is twice as large. The work is preceded by 3 engraved plates: the first two by Girolamo Carattoni offer a portrait of Virgil, and the title, in ornamental frames; the third is a composition in homage to the dedicatee. Provenance: Jesuits of Lyon (modern stamp). (Brunet V, 1291).
