BAYLE (Pierre); FRÉDÉRIC II (king of Prussia). Extract from Bayle's Dictionnaire historique et critique, divided into 2 volumes, with a preface. A Berlin, chez Chrétien Frédéric Voss, 1765. 2 vols. in-8, contemporary tan granite basane, smooth spine decorated, title and greefs, marbled edges (defects to the bindings including a tear at the head of a spine, one cap shaved; browning; 1st fx-title absent and 1st title reassembled, without the portrait). First edition of this selection of articles from Pierre Bayle's dictionary, produced by the Marquis d'Argens, and Frederick II of Prussia, the latter also being the author of the preface. The choice of articles reveals the intentions of the authors, who have selected only entries on ancient and modern philosophers, such as Aristotle, Epicurus, Spinoza and even Savonarola.
