CALMET (Augustin). Ecclesiastical and civil history of Lorraine, which includes what happened of more memorable in the archbishopric of Trier, and in the bishoprics of Metz, Toul and Verdun, since the entry of Julius Caesar in Gaul until the death of Charles V, duke of Lorraine, in 1690; with the supporting documents. 3 volumes in-folio, full sow skin on wooden boards, spine with 6 nerves, havana morocco title-pieces, boards decorated with a set of fillets and cold rolls, red edges, clasps (ordinary rubbing, a few worm spots on the boards and spine of t.1 (ordinary rubbing, a few worm holes on the boards and spines of vols. 1 and 3, one on the upper board of vol. 1, extending into the margins of the vols. and crossing the corners of the plates without serious damage, touching a few letters at the end of vol. 2, 1 upper endpaper detached, sporadic browning; 2 limine ff. mq. on vol. 3). First edition, second printing, of this monumental history of Lorraine, composed by the Benedictine Dom Augustin Calmet (1672-1757) who began writing it in 1713. The illustration is composed of 45 plates engraved on copper, as follows: in volume 1, 11 double or folding maps or plans (duchy of Lorraine and Bar, archbishopric of Trier, dioceses of Metz, Toul, Verdun; plans of the cities of Trier, Metz, Toul, Verdun, Bar-le-Duc and Nancy); in volume 2, 8 plates of coins and 13 of seals and medals; in volume 3, 13 plates of religious architecture (the first 5 offering views of tombs, and the following, plans and elevations of the churches of Metz, Toul, the primatial church of Nancy, and the church of Saint-Nicolas).
