(the last blank), 676 p., [132] f. (including 3 blanks), figs, pl., contemporary ivory vellum, smooth spine, cold fillets at head and tail, title in ink (modern signature on upper cover and spine; minor dampness on very first few f. then sporadic, browning, a few stains, pen tests in margins of p.371 and 379). New edition with an entirely woodcut illustration consisting of 2 folding maps out of the text (Gaul and Spain), and 18 figures in the text, including 6 full-page ones, some showing the fortifications in front of the Gallic cities of Avaricum (Bourges), Alexia (Alesia), Uxellodunum, Massilia (Marseille). According to Renouard, "the woodcuts of this volume are new, and are better than those of the previous editions". Renouard indicates for the last part 136 leaves of which 6 are blank, USTC gives only 130; our copy counts 132 with a quire e which comprises only 4 leaves without apparent lack. Provenance: Giovanni Battista Visconti (1722-1784), archaeologist, successor to Winckelmann as superintendent of antiquities of the Papal States (handwritten bookplate dated 1745); Bayet, 1873 (signatures on the spine, on a flyleaf, and notation on the upper cover).
