Two parts in 1 vol. in-4, [4 (of 6)]-270-75-9 f. (of which one blank), contemporary fawn basane, spine with 5 nerves, gilt title, sown with gilt fleur-de-lys covering the caissons and boards, the latter bordered with a gilt roulette and double fillet, gilt edges (qq. rubs and epidermis, 2 dull corners, negligent worm spot on one nerve, one guard and 2 introductory f. (index, privileges) are missing)
First edition of the commentary on Claudian given by Étienne de Clavière (circa 1550 - 1622), originally from Bourges, then principal of the Collège de Sens and lawyer at the Parlement de Paris, a humanist close to Cazaubon and Scaliger. The edition was shared between three Parisian booksellers, Fouët, Buon and the widow of Guillaume Chaudière. The second part is preceded by a special title addressed to Buon. Some words formerly crossed out on p.253.
A luxuriously bound copy, passed into the library of François Guizot.
