[Manuscrit]. [COYPEL (Charles-Antoine)]. L'avare fastueux, comédie. S.l., s.n., XVIIIe siècle.
[Manuscript]. [COYPEL (Charles-Antoine)]. L'avare lavueux, comedy. S.l., s.n., 18th century. In-4, ink on paper ruled with red ink, [3] blank f., [3] f. (prologue), 92 numbered leaves, [2] blank f., antique ivory vellum, smooth spine, title in ink (edge of upper board gouged at the head without gravity). Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), first painter to the king and director of the Académie de peinture, composed some forty plays between 1717 and 1747. Only one, Les Folies de Cardenio, was published in 1720, and all the others circulated in manuscript copies among a small number of selected amateurs. Among these, we know the duke of La Vallière, eminent bibliophile, who had wished to possess a copy of each of these works; the author yielding to his desire had however operated a selection, and the collection provided comprises only 21 pieces; L'Avare fastueux does not appear there. (Cf. G. Debure, Catalogue... de La Vallière, t.II, p. 453, n° 3463; and BnF, Manuscrits français 24358-24363). The copy is written without particular care but very legible, on the recto only; perhaps it passed under the eyes of the author, since it comprises several corrections. The text is preceded by a prologue in two scenes, entitled: " Parodie du prologue d'Alceste servant de prologue à l'Avare fastueux ". Next to the beginning of the text is a list of actors, among whom are the names of "Coypel the elder" and "Coypel the younger", but also Messrs. De Grandville, Chevalier, Desportes, d'Alençon and Mouvet, elements that could help to identify in which place and circumstance the play was performed.
