The prestigious Maison Vever was founded in Metz in 1821. In 1871, after the Franco-Prussian war, Ernest Vever moved to 19 rue de la Paix in Paris. In 1881, Paul and Henri Vever succeeded their father. Henri was in charge of design, and made a name for himself at the Paris World's Fairs of 1889 and 1900 with his naturalist-inspired jewelry, "sometimes embellished with precious stones, sometimes using techniques brought up to date with the rediscovery of medieval arts, such as plique-à-jour enamel". Vever took part in the World's Fairs and worked with the best designers and craftsmen of the day, such as René Lalique, who worked with the company from 1882 as a designer.
