Pen and black ink, gray wash and white gouache on paper prepared in red.
Monogrammed JH lower right.

The composition was engraved by Jan van der Straet, known as Giovanni Stradano or Stradanus, in a collection dedicated to the exploits of the Medici family published in 1583 (see A. Baroni Vannucci, Jan Van Der Straet dette Giovanni Stradano, flandres pictor et inventer, Jandi Sapi, Milan- Rome 1997, no. 691-10,pp.362-365, repr.).
Heintz made numerous copies after the masters and the engravings he had at his disposal.
Provenance: purchased from Jacques Petithory (1929-1992) in the 1970s.
