Attributed to E. FROMENT-MEURICE, circa 1860 - Lot 146
Attributed to E. FROMENT-MEURICE, circa 1860 Rare and precious marquise parasol with gilded, guilloché, chased and enameled silver handle, set with garnet and turquoise cabochons decorated with scrolls of flowers and foliage, espagnolettes and female masks. Tip featuring a small Hercules, matching clamping runner, pavilion in black Chantilly bobbin lace and cream taffeta on the inside. H. 67 cm In the second half of the 19th century, parasols, like walking sticks, were a useful and demonstrative accessory to underline its owner's wealth on the outside, but also the attributes of a personality, even the whimsy of a character. The handle of this parasol, a veritable jewel, denotes an eminent lady whose jewelled finery must have been some of which were logically commissioned from the same goldsmith, probably the first to do so, who supplied the Court during the Second Empire.
