In our painting, he wears the following three decorations: the first, suspended from his neck by a red ribbon is the medal of the Order of the Legion of Honor, consisting of a star with five double rays on a wreath of oak and laurel. Below, the second medal, suspended by a black ribbon, is the medal of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, consisting of a star with four double rays alternating with fleur-de-lys; finally, the third, pinned to his chest, features a star with four double rays with a laurel wreath and, in the center, a medallion featuring Saint Ferdinand surrounded by the Order's motto the order's motto "Al merito militar ? El Rey y la Patria", is the medal of the Spanish Order of of Saint-Ferdinand. While this latter distinction was probably awarded to him during his diplomatic and military career in in Spain, where he commanded the French and Swiss brigade forming the guard of the King of Spain, Ferdinand VII, the other distinctions are due to his extensive military career, during which he held officer in the King's Regiment, cavalry colonel in Austrian service, cavalry major in French service marshal de camp, commander of the 4th subdivision of the 10th military division and inspector general of infantry.
