Jan BRUEGHEL II, known as the Younger (Antwerp, 1601-1678) - Lot 25
Jan BRUEGHEL II, known as the Younger (Antwerp, 1601-1678) Loading carts in front of mills Oak panel, one board, not parqueted. On the reverse, a panneleur's mark: MV for Michel de Vrient (active between 1615 and 1637), and the Antwerp hand mark. 46.5 x 66 cm Provenance : - collection of Count and Peer of France François de La Bouillerie (1764-1833); by descent private collection in Brittany ; - sale Paris, Artcurial, March 23, 2017; Galerie Claude Vittet, Paris; acquired from the latter by the current owner. A certificate from Dr. Kluaus Ertz dated October 23, 2016 will be given to the purchaser. The mark of Michel de Vrient provides a terminus ante quem for our painting, since the production of this of this panneleur (Rubens' supplier, among others) is no longer attested after 1637. Our landscape would therefore date from artist's best years between 1626, when he took over his father's workshop, and 1637.
