Alongside his paleontology studies at the Museum, Marcel Lémar turned to sculpture and, as a self-taught began modeling the animals he observed at the Jardin des Plantes. It was here that he met François Pompon Pompon and joined the "Groupe des Douze" around 1930. He took part in their exhibitions in 1932 and 1933. He He also exhibited at various Salons, including those of the Indépendants, Automne and Artistes Animaliers. A fine retrospective exhibition was devoted to him at the Musée d'art et d'industrie André Diligent in Roubaix in 2013.
