[Engraving]. TITIEN (after). DUFLOS. Roman emperors and empr - Lot 164
[Engraving]. TITIEN (after). DUFLOS. Roman emperors and empresses. A Paris, chez Duflos [on the plates]; [Paris], Poilly [on the title], 18th century. Suite of 24 copper-engraved portraits, in an ornamental medallion, with captions. In-8, paperback, marbled paper cover, formerly bound, edges speckled (qq. plates a little yellowed; pitting then worm tracery in a corner margin).
Rare suite, probably engraved by Claude Duflos (1665-1727), or by his son Claude-Augustin (1700-1786), and originally published by one or the other, here reissued (probably in a new edition) by Poilly. The plates bear the excudit "Duflos", "C. Duflos", or "Cl. Duflos", except for the first two, which are signed "Cl. Duflos f[ecit]". A title leaf precedes the suite, engraved by Jean Duvivier, and bearing the name de Poilly ("C.P.R.", meaning cum privilegio regis), a dynasty of Parisian engravers and print dealers of the 17th and 18th centuries. This suite does not appear in the BnF online catalog.
