BOLONIAN school circa 1620, follower of Annibale CARRACHE The Return of the Prodigal Son Canvas. Old restorations and lifting. 150.5 x 98 cm Our canvas is a remake of a lost composition by Annibale Carracci, painted around 1590, described by the sources sources on the altar of the Zambecarri chapel in the Corpus Domini church in Bologna, then passed into the collection of Philippe d'Orléans at the Palais-Royal, where it was engraved by Jean Baptiste Tailliard. Several other interpretations of this altarpiece are known, one by Pietro Faccini, smaller by half (74.5 x 56.5 cm), was presented by the Canesso Gallery in 2006, and another is in the Museo Civico in Modena, attributed to Francesco Stringa. A third went on sale in London, Sotheby's, February 22, 1967, n. 45, 144.7 x 96.5 cm.
