Saint Brigid of Sweden 1303-1373, founder around 1346 of the Order of the Brigidines, or Order of the Holy Savior
was particularly devoted to the Crucifix. Here, the haloed saint, canonized in 1391, is dressed in the order's habit
the order's habit, which is normally grey, she wears a white linen crown adorned with five pieces of red cloth
representing the drops of Christ's blood
The donor was not a saint, but a monk of the same order. From Sweden, this order spread to Germany,
England, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and France, where numerous oratories and chapels were founded
following the saint's perinigrations in Provence, on the route to Santiago de Compostela.
