Leo RAUTH (1884 - 1913) - Lot 21
Leo RAUTH (1884 - 1913) Gondoliers in Venice by Night Oil on canvas signed lower left. Restoration. 63.5 x 66 cm German painter and graphic artist Leo Rauth trained at the academies of Leipzig, Karlsruhe, Berlin and Munich, notably under Franz von Stuck. A brilliant representative of a generation fascinated by light and mundane scenes, he developed a personal style combining expressive gestures and contrasting colors. After stays in Paris and Venice, he enjoyed a meteoric rise in Leipzig before his premature death at 28. This work bears witness to his taste for luminous, fairy-tale atmospheres, inherited from his Italian travels. A member of the Leipziger Secession and the Deutscher Künstlerbund, Rauth left a rare body of work, sought after for its elegance and pictorial sensitivity.
