Chinese procession, rare panoramic wallpaper of thirty strips, French manufacture unknown, circa 1810 Very fine grisaille plate printing on planed paper, the strips are numbered from right to left. from right to left. The decor is partly inspired by engravings from two collections published in London a few years before this wallpaper was published by Georges Staunton in 1797 and William Alexander in 1805. Sheets 1 to 6: Chinese palace flanked by pagodas at the water's edge, with characters in Chinese and European costume in the foreground. Lés 7 à 12: travelers disembarking from a boat, greeted on shore by a mandarin and joining a gathering taking tea under a kiosk. Lés 13 to 18: junk moored to shore and cargo unloaded under the guidance of a turbaned merchant seated under a canopy. Walkers and mandarin on horseback. Lés 19 to 25: Chinese procession. Sides 26 to 30: assembly of musicians in a boat near a bridge; on the shore, an elegant woman on a walk in a palanquin. Thirty strips, (traces of moisture on the bottom and consequent degradation of the paper on certain strips, strips 22, 23, 24 and 25 amputated by a third on the lower part.
