Saint Brigid of Sweden (1303-1373), founder around 1346 of the Brigidine Order or Order of the Holy Savior, paid particular devotion to the Crucifixion.
was particularly devoted to the Crucifix. Here, the haloed saint, canonized in 1391, is dressed in the habit
the order's habit, usually gray, and wears a white linen crown adorned with five pieces of red cloth representing
the drops of Christ's blood.
The donor is a monk of the same order. From Sweden, the order spread to Germany, England, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and France, where numerous oratories and chapels were founded following the peregrinations of the saint.
