[Historical document]. [Alsatica]. Letters declaring naturality, 1818. Preprinted piece on vellum, filled in by hand, approx. 35.5 x 49 cm; green wax seal (diam. approx. 12 cm.) in tin box (traces of fold in 4). Original document confirming the granting of French nationality to François Xavier Joseph Reiffel, "maître de mathématiques", on June 17, 1818. Document signed "Louis" for the King, and repeated signature of Garde des Sceaux Étienne-Denis Pasquier. From a family of Alsatian origin, F. X. J. Rieffel, born in Mainz in 1790, lived in Paris from 1793. After graduating from the Ecole Polytechnique in 1811, he worked as a clerk in the Ministry of War Administration, before becoming a mathematics tutor at the Douai artillery school in 1818. Rieffel subsequently taught mathematics at the La Fère artillery school, and applied sciences at the Vincennes artillery school. He translated a Manuel historique de la technologie des armes à feu from German in 1833; in 1845, he wrote a treatise on temporary fortifications, and in the same year a work on the theory of ricochet firing; and in 1846 he translated an Italian work on ballistics into French. Retired on October 11, 1856 to Fontenay-sous-Bois. Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur (1851).
