DIDEROT (Denis). Jacques le fataliste et son maître. À Paris, chez Buisson, An Cinquième de la République [1796].
DIDEROT (Denis). Jacques the fatalist and his master. In Paris, at Buisson, Year Fifth of the Republic [1796]. 2 vol. in-8, [2] f., 286 p. + [2] f., 320 p. [1] blank page, contemporary marbled havana basane, smooth and ornate spine, salmon and green basane title and gilt border, red edges (minor rubbing to the edges, dull corners; one corner mq. in margin t.1 p. 65, tear without loss t.2 p. 219, qq. stains p. 267-274). Counterfeit of the original edition, "extremely rare" according to Adams. This copy is distinguished by a composition not described by specialists. It has all the characteristics of the forgery described by Adams (JF4), including the word "master" always written without circumflex. On the other hand, Adams points out a mistake in the title of volume I: "Jacques la (sic) fataliste", and this particularity is not found in this copy whose title is spelled without mistake. (Adams II, 182-183, ed. JF4).
