In-folio, [8] f., 276 p., contemporary brown calf, spine with 6 nerves, renewed title-piece (accidents, rough restoration at the head of the spine; wax stains in the margin of the dedication, and p. 271-73 (table), not serious; quire I bound in disorder, browning in the first few ff. then sporadic). First edition in French of this amply illustrated selection of texts, which gave access to the greatest number of enthusiasts to the exceptional work of the Italian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616). It is based on the main edition of the works, published in 1615 in Venice under the title "L'idea della architettura universale". From the 1560s onwards, Scamozzi designed and built a large number of palaces, villas, and religious buildings in and around his home city of Venice. His treatise had a lasting influence on the architects of his time and its success continued into the eighteenth century. The illustration is composed of : 1 frontispiece with Scamozzi's portrait in medallion, a vignette on the title, another armorial one at the head of the dedication to Nicolaes Witsen, burgomaster of Amsterdam , all engraved on copper; very nbr. full-page woodcut figures; then 40 full-page engraved on copper; and 24 copper-engraved plates (placed from p. 125 onwards), 3 of which are double. (Berlin Kat., 2608; Fowler, 302).
