Secretary stamped F. I. Papst, Louis XVI - Lot 147
Secretary stamped F. I. Papst, Louis XVI period In flamed mahogany and mahogany veneer, it opens to a drawer, a flap uncovering drawers and lockers, two leaves uncovering three drawers. It rests on tapered feet. Ornamentation of chiselled and gilded bronzes, the locks numbered D. Top of moulded white marble. H. 143 L. 90 P. 43 cm François Ignace Papst received master's degree in 1785. Provenance: probably delivered for Anne Victoire Dervieux (1752-1826) for her house in rue Chantereine in 1785. Sale Drouot Le Roux 23 October 1986. Reproduced in Kjelberg, Le mobilier francais du XVIIIe siècle, p. 679. Anne Victoire Dervieux, a former actress, had a trendy house built by Bélanger on Chantereine Street in 1777. The furniture delivered between 1785 and 1788 was made of mahogany including doors and balustrades. It is highly probable that the secretary and its chest of drawers (former Seligmann collection, reproduced in Salverte, Les ébénistes du XVIIIe siècle pl. LII) were intended for him, the D on the lock entries identifying the recipient in particular.
