This painting, like its original counterpart La rentrée du troupeau
(location unknown), appeared in the 1911 Pierre
Decourcelle sale (Galerie Georges Petit, Lair-Dubreuil
et Baudoin, 29-30 May 1911, lots 38 and 39) (fig.1); it was inspired
by an engraving by Richard de Saint-Non (1727-1791), La
sortie de la bergerie (1776, Musée du Louvre). This engraving
itself is based on the composition of a drawing by Fragonard,
La sortie du troupeau, now in the
Fabre Museum of Montpellier (fig. 2). It was undoubtedly during his
second trip to Italy (1773-1774) that the artist drew
this rustic scene, testimony to the activity of the shepherds
in the Roman countryside and its surroundings. We find
in our painting the figure of the two dogs looking into the
distance, while in the second one the same
movement of the shepherd appears, like that of the stick, as well as the
sense of the shepherd and the construction of the clouds.
Hubert Robert and Fragonard both saw their work
change and evolve during formative journeys in Italy and
particularly in Rome, where they were boarders (1756-1761
) at the Mancini Palace and met Richard de
Saint-Non. The Roman landscapes were a great
inspiration for Hubert Robert who spent eleven years there. He
came back with thousands of drawings that allowed
him to elaborate the compositio
