Ferdinand Duvinage for Alphonse Giroux, circa 1880 Chased ormolu inkwell in the form of a vase on a pedestal. Decorated with goat's heads, AS in a cabochon surmounted by a count's crown. Stained native wood marquetry on an ivory background, decorated with foliage and flowers. Signed Alph Giroux Paris. Slightly missing. H 15 D. 13.5 cm This refined object is a perfect example of the Japonism in vogue in Europe after Japan's opening to the world in 1868. The characteristic marquetry is protected by a patent registered in 1876 by Duvinage.
